Part Two: Response/Reflection
I had the opportunity to do a financial literacy and budgeting presentation at the Street School in Winston Salem NC. The audience for this presentation were high school aged students. I was the subject matter expert because I am a Financial Services Officer at NC State Employees Credit Union, this is my full-time profession. I started by considering the needs and interest of high school students, some starting or continuing jobs. Our main goal, me individually and my organization was to introduce basic financial concepts and practical budgeting skills that were easy to apply and understand. I wanted to help the students grasp the importance of managing money wisely. The presentation included different options on how to make money, store money for utilization and how to save money. I educated the students on account types including checking, savings and other deposit account types. I gave them a brief overview of some of the differences in credit and debit cards and the differences of banks versus credit unions. To keep the students engaged,I asked questions that resulted in rewards if they were answered correctly. I focused on giving practical advice, such as creating a budget, tracking spending, and setting financial goals.
I used examples relevant to their age, like saving for a phone or managing an allowance. I encouraged students to ask questions throughout the presentation to clarify any doubts and ensure they understood the material. After the presentation I provided additional resources for those interested in learning more about financial literacy. I wrapped up by summarizing the key points and emphasizing the importance of starting good financial habits early. Overall all students when asked indicated that they learned something new from the presentation.
